Introducing Balloon Dilation in Denmark
Dr. Martin Nue Møller introduced balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube into the Danish healthcare system in 2013. Starting out in the operating room with patients under full anesthesia, he had to compete for operating room time with other cases. This led him to develop his technique further so the intervention could be performed in an in-office setting instead.
Wanting to replace full anesthesia with local anesthesia, he pioneered the use of a flexible scope instead of a rigid scope to reduce discomfort for the patient.
Performing Procedures in the Office Setting
Using a flexible scope required a highly coordinated team of three skilled professionals working closely together. The doctor guided the balloon, the first assistant controlled the flexible scope, and the second assistant inflated the balloon during the procedure.
As hospitals have become increasingly specialized, more minimally invasive treatments have gradually moved from operating rooms at university hospitals into office-based procedures in primary care clinics.
Expanding Access to ENT Procedures
As the need continues to grow for more ENT practitioners to perform procedures, Dr. Møller recognized the need to break down barriers and expand in-office capabilities. The goal was to enable more advanced ENT care to be performed by more physicians.
To achieve this, he joined forces with his long-time friend Jens Andersen Gad, an engineer with more than 20 years of experience in product development. Together they began working on new ideas to transform how ENT procedures are performed.
The Development of the UniGuide™ Platform
With the ambition of creating a unique modular platform, they developed the UniGuide™ platform. The system is designed to mechanically align the endoscope and the working instrument, allowing a single physician to operate as a “three-handed operator”.
The guiding principles behind the development focused on creating a more integrated workflow with fewer procedural steps, fewer hands required during treatment, and fewer transitions during the procedure.
The platform is designed to work with most existing rigid and flexible endoscopes. It requires no new capital equipment and can be operated without an assistant.
Building the Company
Having limited experience in building a start-up company and bringing a MedTech product to market, the founders joined forces with serial entrepreneur Ole Kring. He has extensive experience within the MedTech start-up world.
Together they have assembled a strong team around the company.
A Team with Broad Expertise
Today, the team brings together extensive experience related to the medical needs of ENT doctors, the development of innovative medical equipment, intellectual property, medical device production, regulatory requirements, and the building of impactful MedTech start-ups.
Together, our team has:
years and more than 2000 in-office procedures
